A brief glimpse of Mekong Delta life

For those on limited time, but want to experience the Mekong Delta, enjoy this two-day, one-night tour, which takes in some highlights of this intriguing and very friendly agricultural region in the south.

The first day, visitors drive 170km from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho by coach; the Mekong Delta's official city hub - crossing the extensive network of canals and rivers by both bridge and ferryboat. In the afternoon, visitors get to experience a true Mekong Delta phenomenon - floating markets - at Cai Rang and Phong Dien. The river resembles a bustling market place, with traders taking to the water to ply their wares, their boats laden with local produce and goods, such as potatoes, watermelons and rice. Visitors can get up close and personal to all the action (and take some great photographs) on two-man sampans, rowed by locals. After all that reverie hustle and bustle, relax at another specialty of the Mekong Delta - verdant, riverside fruit orchards. Returning to Can Tho for the evening, experience some of the city's great seafood or snake restaurants along the river, getting around the city in a local Xe Loi, a vehicle typical of the Mekong Delta region.

The following day, depart Can Tho, travelling deeper into the Mekong Delta to the amiable riverside town of Vinh Long. En route, visitors pass fluorescent green rice fields stretching out as far as the eye can see, worked by farmers and water buffaloes. In Vinh Long, visitors have a chance to visit the area's famed fruit orchards and farms, as well as Bonsai gardens. Lunch is served at a local Delta home; after which they take a small boat through the maze of shaded, narrow canals, stopping at local handicraft workshops - which show they how rice paper and coconut sweets are made. The final day, visitors check - out of their hotel and are driven back to Ho Chi Minh City, where the tour ends.
